Illustrates the Great Irish Famine, uncovering its profound impact on collective Irish memory through scraperboard art.
What lies beneath?
The Great Irish Famine is a story that has been told for several generations and is the single most pivotal experience in modern Irish history.
Now, acclaimed Irish illustrator David Rooney, through the evocative medium of scraperboard, scratches away at the detail of our shared history line by line, uncovering the collective memory that lies beneath us all.
David Rooney saw war service in India and West Africa as a Captain in the Queen's Royal Regiment. After the war he read history at Keble College, Oxford, and went on to a teaching career in Belfast, Germany and England, including four years as a Senior Lecturer at Sandhurst. He is a Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge, and continues to lecture and write.
